These are not the droids you're looking for
[From the Oldie but Goodie file. This originally went out via e-mail on 5 March 2005. I've cleaned it up and added a new link.]
Hello fellow geeks who've been marinated in the American zeitgeist,
I was looking for a WAV file of the Subject's quote, when I stumbled
across the following blog: it reviews a book about Star Wars affecting
one's life. Ah, a book that reopens the debate on what constitutes a
geek and what, a loser....
Loser? Hey, we all have our dreams.
However, it is probably best to follow the advice of Obi-Wan, who
To be contrarian, one of my favorite ruminations about Star Wars has
to be David Brin's. (The first essay is the best, the others just
clarify and elaborate.)
"Star Wars" despots vs. "Star Trek" populists
What's wrong (and right) with "The Phantom Menace"
An Addendum To My Critique of The Star Wars Universe
Commentary on Attack of the Clones
But there is still something about Star Wars that I haven't seen and
really do want to see:
okay, I'd even settle for his other show...
(He changed the links on his site, so I've just reset the above to the referring page for either link. Hopefully, this will be more stable.)

Reportedly answered one "Star Wars" fan's boast that he'd seen
the first movie over a hundred times, with a nod and the words
"Promise me you'll never watch it again." The boy was stunned,
but his mother thanked Guinness.

I saw it in Chicago this past winter, and it was definitely good. However, there was a wistful sense of what could have been. The best parts were easily those where Ross injected his own smart-ass remarks, but unfortunately he played it fairly straight.

Ah! I'm green with envy. I just have to keep checking his tour schedule for a swing to the south. (No offence, eh? but my family doesn't go for the colder climes.)
